Network Bulletin No. 98-51
Date: September 18, 1998
Subject: Excess and redistribution program (XESS)
Index term: Reminder about inspected and usable books
In this XESS cycle, as in previous ones, several libraries
have notified NLS that about one-fourth of the books
received from other libraries were not in usable condition.
In response to this concern, we are again asking libraries
to check the condition of books they offer on XESS. While
it takes time for the library to examine books before they
offer them, additional time is wasted in processing damaged
books, holding them, sending labels, mailing them, and
receiving them at the gaining library. There is a separate
process for disposal of damaged books (see Network Library
Manual section 6.11).
Books, whether they are being offered on XESS or being
shelved, should first be visually inspected. The book
should be complete, the case should be intact, the pads of a
cassette book should be in place, and a disc book should
show no scratches. Some of the items in question for the
last XESS cycle would not have passed this inspection.
RD books were also a problem. When requesting RDs on XESS,
please remember that all copies are the same age, and damage
may be more prevalent.
Please ensure that only usable books are submitted for XESS.
