Many people who read SF are very selective about what they read. I feel
that this happens because there is a lot of hack work done by authors, most
namely in the star trek novelizations. Readers look back at what they've
read before and "My God, did I really read that stuff". Not that all Star
Trek novels are bad, I happen to like Peter David, but I have a certain
learyness about anyone who doesn't come up with their own characters.
