The <separatedmaterial> element is used to encode information about
materials that are related by provenance to the materials being described.
While ISAD(G) specifies that associated materials are located in other
repositories, EAD allows the use of this element for materials that have
been separated by the repository and transferred to another custodial unit
within the repository (e.g., removal of photographs for separate housing,
administration, description, etc.), or to provide information about
materials have been scattered among two or more repositories. The EAD
<relatedmaterial> element is used to encode information about other
materials, which may be held by the same or another repository, that may be
of interest to a researcher but are not related to the described materials
by provenance.
Not to squelch questions of this nature on the listserv, but if I may, I'd
like to promote the recently-published EAD Version 1.0 Tag Library,
available from the Society of American Archivists, which explains these
element relationships in some detail. Contact SAA at [log in to unmask]
or visit their Web site at http://www.archivists.org.
Happy tagging!
