Well, I'm certainly glad I asked the question about EAD and the number of
hits.  The answers have been quite interesting and helpful.  After your last
message, Michael, I took a look at <controlaccess> in the notebook and tag
library supplied at the workshop.  I think a little light bulb went off for
me -- it may be a bit dim yet, but that certainly seems to be a good way to
reduce the number of hits as well as reducing a lot of mark up.  With a
collection of this size and number of series, I was planning to have brief
narratives before most (maybe all) the series anyway.  Your suggestion fits
well into this scheme and makes a lot of sense.  Everyone, thanks again.
