This is just a reminder to subscribers to the EAD list about what
happens when email addresses change or are inactive.
Most electronic lists operate using computer software that treats
each unique address as a separate subscriber. Whenever a message
is posted to the list address, the list software (which has its
own address) sends out copies of the message to everyone except
the address that submitted the message. If your address changes
or is rendered inactive, the list software tries to send messages
anyway (until the address is removed from the list). This
causes the list software to generate numerous delivery error
messages each time anyone submits a message because there are
lots of people whose email systems go down or whose address
is changed without the list being told.
If you find out your email address is going to change or is
going to be inactive for a while, you should unsubscribe from
the EAD list and resubscribe later when you have an active email
account. To unsubscribe, send a one-line message to the electronic
list software's address. The message should contain the following:
UNSUBSCRIBE EAD
Send this message to the following address: [log in to unmask]
You should notice that the list's address is *NOT* "[log in to unmask]"!
This is because the list software is like a cyber person who
is kind enough to send out copies of messages posted to "[log in to unmask]"
and all the other lists it administers. The fact that the listserv
software has its own address, which is different from the various
list addresses used to post messages, is a source of confusion for
many.
If your address changes or becomes inactive, you can send a message
to me (a *real* person) and I will formulate the unsubscribe
message to the listserv software. In your message to me, let me
know what your old email address was (the address you used to be
subscribed under!). It has to be the correct address or I won't
be able to match with the old subscription.
The moral of this diatribe is that *YOU* are responsible for
some of the operation of this and any listserv. Keeping track
of what address is used for what and how to administer your
own subscriptions to electronic lists is part of being internet-literate.
I hope this information helps you to do the right thing as your
needs dictate.
