Network Bulletin No. 98-63
Date: November 20, 1998
Subject: Staff, Network
Index term: 1999 Schedule of Orientation for Network Staff
A three-day orientation program about the services offered y
NLS is available for network staff. This comprehensive
overview gives participants an opportunity to meet NLS staff
they frequently deal with, to gain a deeper understanding of
NLS operations and services, and to meet colleagues from
around the network. The basic orientation program lasts
three days. In June an optional fourth day offers a machine
repair workshop. Participants will meet with
representatives from each of the NLS divisions, sections,
and offices, with time allotted for questions. Participants
are expected to attend the full three days of presentations.
Two afternoons are set aside for "Experience NLS," one hour,
in-depth sessions with sections of NLS chosen by the
orientee. A tour of the Library of Congress buildings on
Capitol Hill is also part of the orientation. The
"Experience NLS" and tour require at least three weeks
advance notice for NLS staff.
The 1999 orientation schedule is:
Monday, March 29 - Wednesday, March 31
Tuesday, June 22 - Thursday, June 24
plus June 25 (machine repair workshop)
Tuesday, August 24 - Thursday, August 26
Monday, November 15 - Wednesday, November 17
The 1995 Revised Standards and Guidelines for Service,
published by the American Library Association, supports
sending appropriate staff members who have completed at
least six months on the job to an NLS orientation.
To register staff members for an orientation, please contact
Mary Mohr at (202) 707-9301. She will send a confirmation
letter to your library with a schedule, a list of local
accommodations, and an "Experience NLS" request form.
