Lucas has only directed two science fiction features, THX 1138 and STAR
WARS until the new STAR WARS film comes out next year. (Already the trailer
has been discussed in newspapers and on Siskel and Ebert's show, has been
shown on the TV news, and added to the attendance of THE SIEGE where it
played. Rarely has a two minute trailer excited such interest). Ridley
Scott also only has two SF films to his credit, both excellent (ALIEN and
BLADE RUNNER), and one flawed fantasy (LEGEND). Mike Resnick posited that
no other director than Kubrick had made three good SF films. (He later
mentioned that he couldn't think of 10 good SF films, and I for one, am
curious as to which films he would put in his top ten).
Terry Gilliam has directed MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL, TIME
BANDITS, BRAZIL, ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN, THE FISHER KING, 12
MONKEYS, FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS and various live action or animated
shorts (including the "Crimson Pirate Assurance" preceding MONTY PYTHON'S
MEANING OF LIFE). He is, along with Tim Burton, one of the most visually
distinctive directors working in Hollywood at present.
WOLFEN starred Albert Finney and was about super-intelligent mutant
wolves who manage to live secretly in the city and the film adds a
relationship to Indians who have similarly been pushed off their lands.
Nice parts for Gregory Hines (his debut I believe) and Edward James Olmos,
good steadicam shots from wolfen's POV, but dumb movie.
