I have been holding on to several postings from recent weeks
concerning EAD style sheets. Beth Bensman and I have
talked about what to add to the EAD HELP PAGES,
and a section for example style sheets seems a good idea.
However, I see a limited use for them right now for two reasons:

1. Style sheets differ according to tagging schemes.
The general syntax of a style sheet may be useful to
scan, but, for example, if I construct a style sheet
to address how I want to array the tables in my instances
(DID = row; UNITLOC, UNITTITLE, UNITDATE = cells),
this method will not work for another repository's instance
that doesn't use a tabular approach. And I would bet that
this would lead to a lot of confusion for some novices.

2. Style sheets are still being prepared in proprietary
software. While many people are still using Panorama,
we (at Beinecke Library) have switched to Multidoc Pro.
MD Pro has an extended qualifying language (including
qualification of navigator entries) which allows for a more
finely detailed display of our instances.
Our style sheet and navigator would, I hope, provide
some good examples, but some of the language
will simply not work with Panorama Pro.
This brings up the scary question of interoperability,
but until DSSSL becomes viable with EAD,
there will be some parts that don't fit.

I still think that, with a proviso, sharing style sheets
can be helpful in developing EAD projects.
The best way to share would be to make auxiliary files
available from individual websites - that is - to provide a
space on each EAD site for downloading these helper files.
Since we are still in development with 1.0, I will be happy to
post sample auxiliary files to the EAD HELP PAGES,
under the TOOLS & HELPER FILES section

Regarding another topic which appeared recently,
encoding levels: one segment of the EAD Application
Guidelines (under development) will address
minimum recommended elements.
A discussion of a wider spectrum of encoding levels
(good, better, best?) is not planned right now.
