i don't think either is going to be swaalowed by the other (they may
both be swallowed by comedy if you want to judge by recent mainstream
genre(s) films.). pure horror has pretty much moved into B-movies, (as
written horror pretty much lives in the small presses, according to two
lists i'm on).
cinematic horror is simply on one of it's thin periods (compare
1945-1955, the mid 70s), and looking for a rebirth, its trying out
different formulas borrowed from various genres.
also, combining genres is currently trendy, not only in film. it'll
pass.
as a fan of both genres, i can't see them swallowed by each other. their
mechanics of effect on the viewer are completely differnet. their
functions for me as a fun are completely different.
