Scope of the Workshop
This is a cataloging and classification workshop to build skills with
selected cartographic types identified in the course description.
Students will learn how to:
* examine the map for description, access, and subject cataloging
content;
* decide on the title when no title or more than one title appears on
the map;
* properly determine and enter scale, projection, and coordinates;
* deal with MARC21 fields for maps, e.g.: 034, 052, 072, 255;
* identify and furnish a main entry and other access points;
* select, structure, and designate subject headings; and
* construct classifications using LC Schedule G - Geography. Maps.
Anthropology. Recreation. 4th ed. (1976)
Workshop faculty will introduce basic map cataloging skills and
concepts using map sheets and map sets as examples and then will focus
on the exceptions arising with other cartographic types. With an
emphasis on Library of Congress policy, this workshop will furnish
instruction in how to apply national level standards for cataloging
records. (Several cartographic areas are NOT covered such as: globes,
GIS data on the Web and other remote access maps, and map metadata,
such as the FGDC.) This is not a course on MARC21 content designation;
however, tags unique to cartographic material will be covered.
Presentation and exercises will not involve use of a computer but
will involve breaking into small discussion groups, viewing overhead
projections, and completing individual and group map measurement and
cataloging exercises.
Workshop Materials
The course workbook, Map Cataloging Manual (1991), is included in the
course fee. It is the definitive guide to Library of Congress map
cataloging practices and complies with national standards developed by
the Library of Congress in cooperation with the worldwide map library
community. Course materials may be left at the Library of Congress
overnight.
Participants will also share desk copies of other tools including:
AACR, 2nd ed. 1988 Revision, Cartographic Materials Cataloging: A
Manual of Interpretations for AACR2 (1982 currently in revision),
Schedule G (LC Classification), and Library of Congress Subject
Headings. (CAUTION: If you plan to bring personal resources, such as
cartographic items, equipment, or cataloging tools into the Library of
Congress, you must make prior arrangements with FLICC for a property
pass. Otherwise, you will not be able to exit the Library of Congress
with your property due to Library of Congress inspection and
collection security regulations.)
Ask the Experts
On the second day of the workshop, please bring a cartographic
cataloging problem from your library for a very special " Ask the
Experts" laboratory. Library of Congress cartographic specialists will
furnish advice specific to your inquiry or cataloging problem. To
prepare for the laboratory, check your "problem shelf" and find a map
that has lingered there too long. Create a sample of your problem by
typing a question or photocopying an illustration onto letter-size
paper. When you arrive for the second day of the workshop, FLICC staff
will collect your question and transfer it to a transparency for
faculty review and possible lab discussion.
Optional Tour
Immediately following the first day of the workshop, staff from the
Library of Congress will lead a private tour of the Geography and Maps
Division from 4:15 p.m. until -5:15 p.m. This tour is optional but a
unique opportunity you will not want to miss.
