Greetings,
I just got of the phone with NDL's maps person, Dominique Pickett, and
here's the scoop on the Places in the News feature.
Get to it through the Maps Collections Home Page
<http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/gmdhome.html>. Eventually you will
also be able to get to the feature through other channels.
The first map in the series is Kosovo. You can zoom in using the MrSid
technology (just like the other maps). Dominique plans to add a gif file
that shows Kosovo in context.
When new maps go online, the Kosovo map will be available via a Places in
the News archive as well as in the General Maps Collection in American
Memory <http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/gnrlhome.html>. Of course, to
go there, these maps will need bibliographic records, which will be added.
(The decision was made to get the current map up first, while it is still
current news and work on the bibliographic information online second.
One concern the Reference Librarians in the Library's Geography and Maps
Division hear from school teachers and media specialists is that it's so
difficult and expensive to get good CURRENT geopolitical maps. With this
feature, they hope to help with that.
Enjoy!
Betty
