LAMA TO OFFER THREE PRECONFERENCES IN NEW ORLEANS, LA.
[Individual brochures and registration forms are on the LAMA web site
at http://www.ala.org/lama/events/preconference99/index.html]
Library storage facilities, managerial competencies, and designing a
learning library are the topics of three preconferences to be offered
by LAMA. The one-day workshops will be held on Friday, June 25, prior
to the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans, La. Registration fees
are $155 for LAMA members; $205 for ALA members; $225 for non-ALA
members. The deadline for registration is May 21.
"If the Book Doesn't Fit...Managing a Library Storage Facility" is
presented by the Buildings and Equipment Section, Buildings for
College and University Libraries Committee and the Library Storage
Discussion Group. A panel of speakers will present practical
information on managing a library storage facility once it is built,
including planning operations, working with consortia or stand-alone
institutions, and carrying out the functions of a storage facility.
In the afternoon, participants will work in organized discussion
groups to identify alternatives and best practices in specific areas
of competency. (LAMA PC #1)
"Implementing Managerial Competencies: Practical Applications,"
sponsored by the Personnel Administration Section, Staff Development
and Economic Status and Staff Welfare Committees is a hands-on
workshop that explores how to apply managerial competencies in the
workplace. After a keynote/overview, participants will work in small
group breakout sessions focusing on applying competencies in three
primary areas: hiring, staff development and performance evaluation.
(LAMA PC #2)
"Integrating Learning with Work: Designing the 21st Century Learning
Library" will provide a vision for the library as a learning
organization and offer practical instruction in how to achieve this
goal in your own institution. Through a combination of lecture,
discussion, self-analysis and small group work, Dr. Julie Beth Todaro
will focus on creating the ideal learning environment to enable the
library staff to meet the challenges of the future. This workshop has
also been presented as a LAMA Regional Institute. (LAMA PC #3)
