Dear BIBCO participants:
I recently had a question from John Sluk at Oberlin College asking what
the correct indicators for use by BIBCO libraries for the 050 field
should be. Is it 14, blank/4 or 04. Apparently, at least 3 of the
examples of core records created attributed to BIBCO libraries in the
Web version of the "Introduction to the Program for Cooperative
Cataloging BIBCO Core Record Standard Introduction" at:
http://lcweb.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/coreintro.html show the indicators set
to 04. I have consulted with several folks (Kate Harcourt, Kay Guiles,
Robert Bremer, Joan Schuitema who also consulted Glenn Patton, Ann Della
Porta, etc.) and it is the consensus of the group that these examples
are in error.
The correct indicators to use in 050s assigned by BIBCO libraries is
blank/4. Indicators 14 are (were) assigned only by those BIBCO
libraries working in the LC database. When a BIBCO record is used by LC
and redistributed the indicators are changed to 04 in each case.
If any of you have documentation provided by trainers or printed from
the Web that show this error please take the time to correct the
indicators to reflect this clarification now or print a new copy from
the Web (tomorrow) so as to avoid confusion later.
Questions, comments, etc. are welcome.
