Well, the reviews that I've read that indicate a less than
favorable opinion hardly put it in those words. Mostly they
seem to be disappointed that the movie isn't a lot more; the
problem seems to be their expectations, not the movie
itself.
I'll say this much: I bought the re-release of the Star Wars
trilogy, in wide screen format, when it first became
available. (No, I didn't go and see it again.) Mostly I
bought it for the format. I found that the CGI stuff that
was added to the movies was really bad. I hated that hokey
scene in Star Wars where they stuck a CGI Jabba into the
landing bay with the Millenium Falcon. I abhored the snow
beast on Hoth. I loathed the new singing scene in Jabba's
hold.
CGI is really great technology, but what I saw in the
re-release made me think that it is in no way ready for
serious cinematography. Where it is used for minor additions
it works fine, but the news that "The Phantom Menace" would
include major CGI characters worried me a lot.
I haven't seen the movie, yet. I probably will enjoy it,
because my demands on a movie aren't really all that great.
I only hope that Jar Jar Binks won't have me wincing through
every scene that he's in.
