hi,
using the "LC in OCLC" citation practice may continue
to have utility for uniform titles, based on LC's
practice to omit 240 uniform titles when the title
proper in the 245 is identical to the uniform title.
(this practice makes sense for MUMS because MUMS
utilizes LC filing rules--i expect it will change with
the implementation of ILS).

so for several categories of materials, judgements have been recorded de
facto regarding uniform titles in LC records without corresponding NARS.
in many of these cases, according to LC practice regarding the creation of
NARs (not required for name/titles when references are not required), the
title has been established via the bibliographic record. in these cases,
it seems easier to use the "LC in OCLC" citation practice to justify the
title rather than re-doing the research already conducted by the LC
cataloger, which research was required in order NOT to include the uniform
title field (240) in the first place.

this practice is not unique to music materials, although it
is probably more common to music materials.
