The word "android" is almost 300 years old. That surprised me. I
would have bet that it was coined by Asimov or HG Wells. I'm
pretty sure that "droid" is derived from "android," even though
just about none of the droids on "Star Wars" are androids. The
word "droid" is not in my dictionary, so I'm betting on fairly
recent coinage.
The first time I remember ever hearing it was in "Star Wars." I
remember thinking that R2-D2 was no android.
