In _I Robot_, _Caves of Steel_, etc. human form robots were
robots. Presumably - I'm not going back and haul out my Asimov
books to quote chapter and paragraph - Androids would be human
form robots that can pass for human since they have an artificial
exterior covering that simulates human skin. For example, in the
Alien films there was an artificial that passed for human until shot,
decapitated, etc. at which point the milky 'blood', electronics, or 'still
walking and talking after being fatally shot' gives the artificial away.
IMHO, C3-PO was not an android. It was/is a human form robot
while R2-D2 was a utilitarian robot. There are no androids in Star
Wars. Because Lucas wrote the script that calls them Droids is
about as definitive as the Millennium Falcon being able to make the
run to (location unknown) in so many parsecs (parallax seconds) - a
measure of distance, not time; ask an Astronomer!

That's fine if you don't appreciate their dialogue; however, they
were part of the plot that would have had to been provided by
another character who could: link and communicate with other
computers, carry the message from the Princess to Obi-Wan while
escaping without being detected as a life form to be shot out of
space, act as a general purpose translator (not much). If you don't
like them, that's fine; Lucas to wrote them into the script to get
around situations. They were the 'Two Stooges' of the original Star
Wars trilogy. At least now we know you didn't appreciate their
dialogue.
