As our culinary colleague almost says straight out--go define intelligence
first. Computers make much better calculators than most of us do...although
apparently some savants can give them a run for the money in some ways. Does
that already make them more intelligent? Not an easy thing, and not nearly
as objectively measurable as devices to run a dash.

Subject: smarter than human
Read an article by inventor of Kurtzweil reading machine in
a recent news magazine -- McLeans? -- to the effect that by
2019 we will have AI that surpasses humans in intelligence.
Not just for mechancical and repetitive jobs but for knowledge
worker jobs. I always "justified" mechanization on the grounds
that if well applied humans could do more intrinsically interesting
and/or rewarding things. Now I find myself wondering whether
I never felt the sting before solely because my own occpational
niche was never targetted. If we could create machines with
greater intelligence than our own, should we? Thoughts.
