Ron, and everybody else,

If you received the file in the body of an email message as gibberish,
you're safe. If you received "happy.exe" as an attachment and did not open
it, you are also safe. If you opened it and saw the fireworks display,
it's time to disinfect your hard drive. (It could be time, anyway, as this
falls under the heading of maintenance.)

Because this gibberish thing happens with listservs, we ask that you do not
send attachments to the list--even on purpose. Instead, copy the text, and
paste it into a message to the list, or offer to send your file off list.

By the way, the gibberish is caused by the sender's (or our gateway's)
software converting attachments using a different method that your email
software uses (and some use more than one). The most popular conversions
are MIME, BIN-HEX, and UUE. There are tools to convert the gibberish back
into usable files. If people are interested in more information on this
topic, let me know ([log in to unmask]) and I'll send appropriate URLs.
