KERIS DELIVERS OCLC FIRSTSEARCH IN KOREA
DUBLIN, Ohio, Aug. 18, 1999--The Korea Education & Research Information
Service (KERIS) is now using the OCLC FirstSearch service and subscribing to
92 electronic journals through the OCLC FirstSearch Electronic Collections
Online database for some 200 universities and research institutions in the
Republic of Korea.
KERIS, a new government agency created earlier this year in the Ministry of
Education, Republic of Korea, is responsible for providing electronic
information services to all educational institutions in the country--from
kindergarten on up.
"We are pleased to be associated with OCLC in meeting the information needs
of the education and research community of our country," said Shu Sam Young,
president of KERIS. "OCLC is a nonprofit, world-class information
provider."
"OCLC appreciates the opportunity to work with KERIS to fulfill the mission
shared by our two organizations, namely, to further access to the world's
information at the lowest cost possible," said Andrew H. Wang, director,
OCLC Asia Pacific Services. "I hope that the working relationship between
our organizations will be fruitful, pleasant and lasting."
The Electronic Collections Online journals offered by KERIS to universities
and research institutions in Korea are published by Blackwell Publishers,
CRC Press, Johns Hopkins University Press, MIT Press and Plenum Publishers.
Formerly a separate service, the Electronic Collections Online database is
now offered through FirstSearch. The integration of Electronic Collections
Online with FirstSearch combines the growing Electronic Collections Online
journal set with links to full text, document delivery, library holdings and
interlibrary loan options that already exist on the FirstSearch service.
The FirstSearch service links articles from nearly 2,000 Electronic
Collections Online journals to citations in abstract and index databases
throughout the service. More information about Electronic Collections
Online, including a list of available journals, can be found at
<http://www.oclc.org/oclc/menu/eco.htm>.
The OCLC FirstSearch service, which has been completely redesigned this
year, is an online reference service for end users. FirstSearch offers a
comprehensive collection of over 80 databases and includes links to full
text, document delivery, library holdings and interlibrary loan. More
information on FirstSearch can be found at
<http://www.oclc.org/oclc/menu/fs_new.htm>.
The Korea Multimedia Education Center (KMEC) and the Korea Research
Information Center (KRIC) were merged in April 1999 to form KERIS. KERIS
was established to advance the quality of learning and research in today's
knowledge-based society by supporting cyber education and operating and
supporting educational databases and network systems. More information on
KERIS can be found at <http://www.keris.or.kr>.
