The Web is a vital resource for news and current events. From online
up-to-the-minute wire services such as Associated Press and Reuters
to news magazines and the alternative press, learn how and where to
find the latest news. While many print and broadcast news services
and publications have extensive online counterparts, there are many
online publications that exist uniquely on the Web. All sources shown
will
offer completely free or predominantly free information. In this full-
day, hands-on workshop you will
=95Learn how top newspapers are offering more and better information
on their web sites than in their printed editions
=95Find news sources with searchable archives for older news stories
=95Find and use customizable news tools that allow quicker, simpler
access to news topics of personal interest =95Learn about news sources
using
=93push=94 technologies, e-mail delivery of selected news topics, and
desktop
audio delivery of radio newssources
Prerequisites:
Familiarity with basic World Wide Web navigation.
Instructor:
Dan Ream, Virginia Commonwealth University
Mr. Ream is the head of instruction & outreach services at Virginia
Commonwealth University, where he teaches faculty, students, and
staff in many disciplines, how to locate and use Internet resources for
research and instruction. A graduate of the University of South Florida
Library School, Mr. Ream has also worked at the University of
Tennessee
Library. He has served as head of reference in both the main and
medical
libraries at Virginia Commonwealth University and frequently appears
on a
Richmond radio show doing a segment entitled =93Dan Ream=92s Picks=94
on various
Internet topics.
