In response to questions recently posed by NACO participants, the BFM
statement at <http://lcweb.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/nacobfm.html> has been
updated to include information about the BFM procedures when headings
with the label "[from old catalog]" are encountered while searching the
LC Online Catalog. Specifically, the second paragraph in the web
announcement has been expanded (see 1 below) and a new paragraph has
been added at the end of the statement (see 2 below).
*********************
1) The current policy regarding BFM will be retained for the immediate
future. Currently, NACO participants report BFM as it affects "active"
LC bibliographic records; records from LC's retrospective files are not
currently considered "active" records in this context and will continue
to be excluded from the universe for the creation of new headings and
from BFM reporting.
2) A series of frequently asked questions on BFM and records newly
integrated into the "active" LC database is under development and will
be posted on the NACO homepage to further assist PCC liaisons in
responding to questions from catalogers that may arise as they create
and modify authority headings. NACO catalogers are encouraged to contact
their Coop Cataloging team liaison if they have any questions on this
matter.
