SYSTEMS AND DIGITAL RESOURCES ARCHIVIST
Manuscripts and Archives, Yale University Library

Normal Work Schedule:Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.     37.5 hours per

THE UNIVERSITY AND LIBRARY
The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and
research at the University, has more than 10 million volumes housed in the
Sterling Memorial Library and over 20 school and department libraries.  It
employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE who have the
opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and students,
participate on committees and are involved in other areas of staff
development.  A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books and
manuscripts to a rapidly expanding network of electronic resources, constitutes
one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The Library is engaged in numerous
ambitious projects such as the renovation of the main library building, the
complete conversion of the Library's catalog, and various automation projects,
which include network access to scholarly information and digital preservation.


GENERAL PURPOSE
Reporting to the Director, Manuscripts and Archives, the incumbent of this
position will be responsible for the planning, design, implementation, and
maintenance of the department's automated management and descriptive systems,
and of systems for the creation, maintenance, and delivery of original and
surrogate digital resources.  The incumbent will provide technical leadership
and support to the Archives 300 project in the design and implementation of an
integrated system for the delivery of information on Yale history and archival
materials as well as in the development of standard record structures and
systems for the recording and retrieval of Yale historical and biographical
information.  The incumbent will also plan and supervise user and systems
support activities for the department.

Success in this position will be measured by the degree to which systems and
digital resources are deployed in a timely fashion and are reliable, efficient,
intuitive, and sustainable.


RESPONSIBILITIES
Coordinates systems and digital resources planning in Manuscripts and Archives
taking into account professional and industry trends and projections as well as
university, library, and departmental plans. Keeps abreast of professional and
technological developments affecting the department's automated systems and
digital resources and recommends upgrades, software and equipment purchases,
and migration strategies, consistent with university and library objectives and
policies. Communicates and coordinates systems and digital resources plans with
appropriate professional, university, and library groups through reports,
service on committees, and active professional contacts.  Serves as technical
liaison with the Library Systems Office and the university's Information
Technology Services department for systems, electronic records, data
warehousing, and related issues. Develops resources needed to advance priority
systems and digital resources programs and projects in Manuscripts and Archives
through internal budget and resource planning and grant and development
proposals. Provides technical and project management leadership and
coordination for systems and digital resources development, implementation, and
maintenance projects. Coordinates and provides technical leadership for the
development, implementation, and maintenance of systems to support management
of and research access to the Yale University Archives, ensuring the effective
integration of historical and contextual information, record descriptions,
electronic records, and digital surrogates of the holdings of the Archives.
Directs the department's systems and user support activities to ensure that
systems and applications are reliable and that staff are fully trained in their
use.  Coordinates the use of library and other external systems. Supervises
systems and user support staff. Recommends the selection and coordinates the
work of outside vendors hired for systems and digital resources projects.
Participates in departmental strategic and action planning and in the
formulation of departmental policies and procedures by assembling information,
drafting policy and procedure memoranda, and making recommendations on proposed
policies and procedures. Makes recommendations on personnel selection, staffing
requirements, and equipment and supply needs. Participates in library planning
activities and is active professionally.

Manuscripts and Archives is aggressively committed to the utilization of
appropriate digital technologies for the management,
discovery, and delivery of its holdings and services to the Yale and scholarly
communities.  The department is also strongly committed to the development and
implementation of accepted professional and industry standards in these
technologies and to the integration of its systems and digital resources with
similar resources at Yale and other educational and research institutions.

QUALIFICATIONS
M.A. degree in history, computer science, or related discipline and/or ALA
accredited M.L.S.
Formal archival and records management, library science, computer science, or
related training or education.
Two years experience in an archival, records management, library, or similar
environment with increasing responsibility for systems development,
implementation, or maintenance.
Familiarity with professional standards for management and descriptive
information in archives and libraries, including MARC, AACR2, APPM, and EAD.
Experience with encoded text applications (XML, SGML and HTML) in an archival
or other academic or research setting.
Experience with relational database systems, preferably SQL Server or Access.
Experience with delivering content in web-based applications.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team setting with administrative,
professional, and support staff.

Preferred: Experience with developing or administering programs for the support
and training of computer users.
Experience with planning and selecting automated systems.
Programming experience, preferably with Visual Basic or Perl.
Professional archival, library, or systems experience in an academic or
research setting.
Supervisory experience.
