This was my first thought; then I realised that "v" is
word-constituent, so that a search like:

        author=vkernighan

is unparseable.

> = =     adjacent words
> ~         relevant words
> =      exact string

I would prefer unadorned "=" to mean adjacency, since that will be
what people want most of the time.
