One of the founding premises of srw was that there are a large number (an infinite number, for practical purposes) of potential attribute combinations in Z39.50, and that in reality a very small and manageable subset of these are used, small enough that an index can be defined for each. And if this is still true, why does the combination need to be machine readable? --Ray
