When we put out the last version of MODS on June 11, 2002, we said it
would remain stable for six months for people to experiment. We are
planning to issue a new schema before mid-December and are now focusing on
what the changes need to be.

There has been a bit of discussion on this list and we will consider the
changes suggested. These are: parsing names into family name and given
name, etc.; allowing for alternate graphics (although it is not clear that
this is necessary); allowing for an "otherDate" as a generic date element.

There are a number of changes that we have identified through experiments
and various comments. We have a list of tentative changes available at:
http://www.loc.gov/standards/mods/changes.html. We feel fairly confident
about making those changes. In addition we have several more possible
changes that we will be discussing that have also emerged from analyzing
converted MARC to MODS records and from various projects attempting to use
MODS.

Anyone who is experimenting with MODS should send us changes that they are
interested in seeing. We would like to finalize these fairly soon and put
out a new schema in advance of the six-month date (Dec. 11, 2002). So now
is the time to let us know. You may either send a message to the
[log in to unmask] list or directly to me ([log in to unmask]).
