We are adding elements to MODS to be able to parse a citation especially for the ability to be able to generate an openURL; there has also been much interest from those needing this type of information to create bibliographic citations in XML. The initial reasons to add these in MODS are similar to those for adding to MARC in the proposal that was recently approved giving fuller citation information in field 773. In MARC we are constrained by the available subfields in the field, so the parsing is not as complete as what has been proposed for MODS, although the elements can be mapped. Since XML doesn't impose a similar restraint it makes sense to parse the data in MODS. For full enumeration and chronology information (e.g. the coded MARC holdings elements that were recently mentioned for seasons), users should consider using the extension element. It is possible to encode full holdings information using the existing Z39.50 holdings schema. See the MODS guidelines under <extension> for examples. For such complex information, this should be used in conjunction with free text (in the proposed <part><date> element.
