POSITION:  Senior Monographic Cataloger
DIVISION:   Technical Services
REPORTS TO:  Head, Catalog Department


1. Serves as an advisor on cataloging matters for 7 original monographic
catalogers. With the Department Head, monitors the quality and quantity of
cataloging produced by these catalogers. Refers questions and problems to
the Department Head as necessary. Provides feedback to the Department Head
for the catalogers' annual evaluations.

2. Assists the Department Head in the training for and revision of Program
for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) NACO (authority record) and BIBCO
(bibliographic record) contributions.

3.  For at least 50% of the time, using Voyager, OCLC, the Dewey Decimal
Classification, and LCSH, performs original or complex copy cataloging of
monographs on any subject, in any Roman alphabet language, and in any
format. Most works are handled without benefit of any matching or variant
copy. Authority work is performed at the local or national level, as
appropriate. Plays a significant role in the processing of at least one of
the following formats: electronic resources, video recordings, or microforms.

4.  Assists in the delineation of policies and procedures related to
cataloging. Prepares cataloging documentation as needed. Also updates older
cataloging documentation, placing it on the Department's web site. Prepares
monthly statistical and quarterly written reports.

5. Coordinates and conducts special tests or projects including the
supervision of library school interns.

6. Serves as the Department's OCLC Coordinator.

7. Keeps abreast of current cataloging issues and trends.

8. Performs related duties as assigned.

Required:  Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school or the
equivalent combination of education and relevant library experience.  At
least three years professional cataloging experience using an automated
system in an academic library (including substantial original cataloging
experience).  Academic knowledge sufficient to perform subject analysis in
relevant modern European foreign languages. Broad educational background.
Facility with personal computers, database searching, and network
navigation tools. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in
writing. Ability to flourish in a changing work environment. Knowledge of
MARC formats, national cataloging and authority control standards. Interest
in training and management.

Preferred: Some supervisory, training, or management experience in an
academic library. Significant PCC experience. Evidence of professional
service and/or research.

SALARY:  dependent upon qualifications and experience. $40,000 minimum.
