***the following announcement is widely cross-posted***

The ALCTS/LITA MARC Formats Interest Group (MFIG) is pleased to provide
an opportunity for discussion on

"MARC Format and XML Syntax: Relationships and Possibilities"

ALA Midwinter Conference in San Diego, California
Saturday, 10 January 2004
2:00-4:00 p.m.
San Diego Convention Center, Room 1B

Rebecca Guenther, Senior Networking and Standard Specialist for the
Network Development and MARC Standards Office of the Library of
Congress, will present MARC/XML intiatives being pursued by the Library
of Congress, including the MARCXML Schema, MODS (Metadata Object
Description Schema), and METS (Metadata Encoding & Transmission
Standard). This topic was originally scheduled for presentation at the
ALA/CLA Annual meeting last June, but technical issues required that we
postpone to Midwinter. Please join us to learn how to assess issues
related to MARC in XML, and share your questions and concerns on
developments in this area.

(Thanks to Laura Sill, 2002/2003 MFIG Chair for graciously allowing us
to borrow both 'her' topic idea and her announcement text! ;) )
