Dear Colleagues,
We are planning to set up a major database of rare books of several Hungarian
libraries. So far the general practice among the libraries was either to
create a separate bib. record for all copies of a publication or create one
bib. record, enter copy specific notes on various copies and to try
to separated them with the help of subfield $5. Something like the following:

We would like to move towards a structure where one bib. record
is created for a manifestation of a work and copy specific details are
removed to item records belonging to copies. In a database of several
libraries it seems to be a necessary step.
This way, however, we seem to
be unable to create all those name headings that belong to copy specific
data now in the item record. Is it necessary to sacrifice the uniform names of
possessors if we want the more coherent structure of bibliographic and item
records?

Is there any clever and if possible standard way around the problem? Is it a
totally impossible idea to add name headings to holding/item records? (The
system we are going to use might be able to cope with this idea.) It seems
to make more sense then leaving the heading in the bib. record.
I would be very much interesed in your opinion and advice.
