The trouble with that is that much of RAH's point derives from the MI's
inherent effectiveness. In the movie the MI were practically sitting
ducks."

The film makers also pointed out that automated armor would have made it
difficult for the audience to identify each performer. And, Verhoeven
and company wanted to mix large scale WW II infantry action with THEM!
style monsters; this meant greatly reduced air support and artillery and
primitive tactics.

Using existing weapons and tactics, 21st Century soldiers could probably
mount more effective results than those achieved by the movie's version
of the MI.
