Network Bulletin No. 04-49

Date: August 20, 2004

Subject: Staff, Network
Index term: 2005 schedule of orientation for network staff

A three-day orientation program about NLS services is available to network staff onsite in Washington,
D.C. This comprehensive overview gives participants an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of
NLS operations and services, to meet with NLS staff with whom they frequently communicate, and to get
together with colleagues from around the network. Participants will be briefed on NLS directives by
representatives from each of its divisions, sections, and offices, with time allotted for questions. Each
may choose two one-hour in-depth "Experience NLS" sessions on timely NLS topics such as Internet
accessibility, selection for the national collection, and the International Union Catalog. Note that in June
an optional fourth day offers a machine-repair workshop. A tour of the Library of Congress buildings on
Capitol Hill is also part of the orientation. A sample schedule is available at:

<http://www.loc.gov/nls/nlm/4_6_OrientationSchedule.html>

Participants are expected to attend the entire program.

The 2005 calendar year orientation schedule is:

March 30-April 1, Wednesday-Friday
June 14-16, Tuesday-Thursday (plus Friday, June 17, machine-repair workshop)
October 18-20, Tuesday-Thursday

The 1995 __Revised Standards and Guidelines of Service (11.9),__ published by the American Library
Association, supports sending appropriate staff members who have completed at least six months on the job
to an NLS orientation.
