The following announcement may be of interest to American Memory Fellows and Library staff: The deadline to apply for the Distance-Independent Ph.D. Program at the University of North Texas School of Library & Information Sciences program is December 15, 2004. The University of North Texas at Denton announces the availability of 10 additional fellowships in its Distance-Independent Ph.D. Program. Beginning in the summer of 2005, a Web-supported cohort will be created with assistance provided for two years tuition and computer with broadband connectivity. The following announcement comes from Dr. Brian O'Connor, program director and is also posted at http://web2.unt.edu/isdocs/distancePhD.htm. We are creating a diverse cohort of doctoral students, easing or erasing monetary, cultural, and geographic roadblocks, and refining a model that will have broad application to doctoral level education for our field. We will pay tuition for the coursework portion of the doctoral pursuits of five students interested in school media libraries and provide assistance for a computer and broadband connectivity. The program will be largely web-based coursework and socializing experience. This will be combined with mentoring by faculty and professionals in the field. The University of North Texas School of Library & Information Sciences is in a unique location, technological environment, and educational model to take a doctoral program beyond a brick and mortar setting. Our successes with the on-line School Media program, delivery of numerous graduate courses in a Web Institute format, experiences with mediated doctoral courses, and an interdisciplinary faculty provide the foundation for this opportunity to enrich lives and develop the professoriate needed to train capable, thoughtful, and caring 21st century librarians. We especially encourage members of under represented groups to apply.
