With respect to the second problem, it could be the version of Saxon you are using. If its Instant Saxon, it requires the Microsoft Virtual Machine (their version of the JVM) and not some other version. I was going to suggest that the second problem is due to not having the java virtual machine installed, but since Katy Hayes is having the same problem, there might be something else at work there.
