Since the proposal here is totally opaque to me, I can only say that I have the vague feeling: a) the problem is really one of inline markup (for example, titles-within-titles) that I've brought up numerous times in the past year, but which has never gotten anywhere* b) that this is a less-than-ideal, quite limited, MARC-like solution to that problem But in the absence of an example, or a more clearly-defined problem, it's hard to say; I could be totally wrong. Existing practice in TEI tends to be: <title level="m">A <title level="a">Title</title> within a Title</title> The single character level attribute is what I'd like to ditch because it's not very helpful. Still, it's important to allow this coding.
