RUSA/LC Forum on Metadata and Reference Needs
The AMeGA (Automatic Metadata Generation Applications) Project: Implications and Insights for Reference Services
Sunday, June 26
2:00 PM
Salon VI, Palmer House Hilton

Metadata is fundamental to reference services, but traditional means of generating metadata 'by hand' are unable to keep pace with the creation of current online resources. Libraries that strive to provide quality reference services need to advance bibliographic control by intelligently integrating human expertise and automatic processing methods for metadata creation.

Professor Jane Greenberg of the School of Information and Library Science, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will discuss the AMeGA project (http://ils.unc.edu/mrc/amega.htm) to "enable libraries to extract and harvest metadata from Web-based resources in order to create catalog records ..." at the RUSA/LC Forum on Metadata for Reference Needs on Sunday afternoon, June 26, at 2:00 in Salon VI of the Palmer House Hilton. Carolyn Larson, a reference specialist in the Library of Congress Science, Technology and Business Division, will provide commentary. This presentation builds on Greenberg's talk last year at the LC Conference 2000 Action Plan Forum. It will also highlight the Recommended Functional Requirements for Metadata Generation Applications.

All reference librarians and technical services librarians are invited to attend and voice their own insights about metadata that is needed for reference services using digital resources.

Greenberg conducted the research for AMeGA in connection with Section 4.2 of the Library of Congress Bibliographic Control Action Plan. The RUSA/LC Forum is an ongoing opportunity for dialogue among reference librarians and bibliographic control specialists.
