Hi Stephanie --

I asked almost this same question last week since we wanted to include a photo of the subject of a collection as part of the BIOGHIST element, and the consensus seemed to be to use an EXTPTR, since at this point you are not *describing* the collection but rather just adding some enhanced graphics (whether or not the graphics also are part of the collection). I think this logic applies to your situation also so EXTPTR would be the right choice.

Here's how we did it:

<extptr xpointer="waxman.jpg" show="embed" actuate="onload" altrender="right" title="Last portrait of Franz Waxman, taken by Boris Goldenberg in 1965, for the premiere of The Song of Terezn at the Cincinnati May Festival" role="image/jpg"/>

Based on @SHOW=EMBED, our xslt conversion creates an IMG tag in the output, using the @XPOINTER value for the SRC attribute. (If @SHOW isn't EMBED (e.g. if we were linking to an audio file or something) then our XSLT processing creates a hyperlink rather than an IMG tag.) EAD has no provision for formatting info like alignment so we've compromised by using @ALTRENDER to include that.

So our output is:

<img src="waxman.jpg" alt="Last portrait of Franz Waxman, taken by Boris Goldenberg in 1965, for the premiere of The Song of Terez&iacute;n at the Cincinnati May Festival" align="right">

Hi all,

We currently have a group of EAD encoded finding aids on our website and I
have been asked to work out how to embed a "representative" image from each
of the collections described at the beginning of each finding aid. I'm a
little confused as to what tag to use. I understand that <dao>/<daogrp>
should be used for links to digital representations of collections being
described in the finding aid, and another EAD linking mechanism, such as
<exptr>, should be used for digital objects that are included in the finding
aid but are not part of the collection being described. Since the images we
use will be from the collections described then <dao>/<daogrp> should apply,
but then again the images won't be showing up in the part of the finding aid
in which they're actually described but are being used more as "title page"
illustrations, so is it more appropraite to <exptr>?

Has anyone else done this and if so, could you share your encoding with me?

Many thanks in advance,
