In line with the optional

It should be pointed out that the option for recording a series statement
as 490 0 applies *only* to *unestablished* series. Thus, the
"in line with" statement seems somewhat misleading. Per
the Chart of All PCC BIBCO Core Record Standards, Revised 02/25/2003
(
http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/bibco/core2002.html):
4XX
(Series statement)
- 35) Transcribe all series as found on an item in either a 490 or a
440 field. All traced series must be supported by a national level
authority record. Untraced series need not be supported by a national
level authority record. If a national level series authority record
already exists for the series, follow the first tracing practice
indicated on the record and record the series and tracing appropriately
(i.e., in a 490 field, a 440 field or a 490/8XX pairing)
And, in Frequently Asked Questions About Series
(
http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/bibco/seriesfaq.html) under the
question "What are the options for PCC participants when their local
treatment decision is NOT to trace a series?" it is clear that, if
an SAR exists, the established tracing practice must be followed if the
record is to be labelled as PCC.
From this, it would follow that there will be a significant reduction in
PCC records emanating from LC.
