U. S. Naval Observatory Library Tour

As part of a series of orientations to libraries and information centers, FLICC is offering an opportunity for federal librarians to become acquainted with the U.S. Naval Observatory Library. Boasting the largest astronomy library in the U.S., the library also features original works by Galileo and Copernicus, as well as constellation drawings that date back to 1482. The orientation will feature the history of the Naval Observatory, an overview of the library's information, technical and Web services and a tour of the facilities.

Place
U.S. Naval Observatory is located off of Massachusetts Avenue at the end of Observatory Circle, NW, Washington, DC. All visitors must enter the grounds via the Observatory's South Gate, located at the end of Observatory Circle near the Embassy of New Zealand. Free parking is available on observatory grounds in the South Lot. Police will give visitors directions to the South Lot which is approximately a five minute walk from Building 1 where the library is located. A map of the observatory is available online at http://www.usno.navy.mil/USNOMap.pdf.

There is ample on-street parking available outside the gate. Please leave backpacks, bags, and any bulky items in your vehicle, as they will not be permitted on the grounds. Please line up outside the gate and obey all instructions from the security personnel. Cameras are permitted on the grounds.

 
 
Metro
The Naval Observatory is accessible via MetroBus from Metro's Re line Friendship Heights, Tenleytown-AU, Dupont Circle, and Farragut North stations and the Farragut West station which is on the Orange and Blue lines. The N2, N4, and N6 MetroBus connects at these stations and travel past the Naval Observatory along Massachusetts Avenue.
