NLS has been asked to publicize a vacancy announcement for librarian reader
advisor at the Arizona State Library, Braille and Talking Book Library Division.

Position/Title:      Librarian   Reader Advisor (2 positions available)
Location:   1030 N. 32nd Street, Phoenix, AZ 98550
Starting Salary:     $36,000 -- $42,000 DOE

Job Description Summary:  Provide reader services to blind and visually impaired patrons with
additional responsibility for either:
1. institutional accounts or 
2. young adult and juvenile readers

Responsibilities include:
    Interview new patrons and establish patron records
    Select books in every subject area to send to patrons
    Monitor patron records.
    Correspond with patrons by phone, email, fax, or in person.
    Respond to reader request for books, magazines, videos and play-back equipment.
    Responsible for approximately 25% of the adult readership and, in addition, for either:
1.  Institutional accounts such as hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and assisted living facilities and
outreach to these institutions or
2.  Approximately 225 youth age 16 and under for whom the employee plans special services including
programs, newsletters and bibliographies.
    Revise and edit bi-annual publication "Adaptive Technology in Arizona Libraries".     
    Serve on agency committees as needed.
    Perform other duties that may be assigned

Note: This position is not covered by the Arizona State Merit System Rules.

Desired Qualifications:
   Knowledge of books, authors, genres; of library policies and procedures.  Technical knowledge of
computers and computer programs including Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft Internet
Explorer.  Knowledge of patron interview techniques and ability to accommodate individual patron's
needs and preferences.  Knowledge of community resources and library reference materials. 
Knowledge of search strategies to use online and print sources to obtain needed information; of
bibliographic form; of library collection and sources of alternate materials.
   Two years' experience as a professional librarian equivalent to a Librarian I, which includes a
Master's degree in Library Science from an accredited college or university.  A combination of
experience and other college degrees may substitute for the NLS degree preference.
    The ideal candidate will have good knowledge and popular reading material, experience in using
Internet resources and word processing programs, and experience in library service to institutions,
disabled, elderly and/or children.
