Dear Colleagues,

We are very happy to share with you an exciting new development in the CJK cataloging world. After many years of discussion about the value of having a NACO funnel project to serve the needs of the CJK community and with the help and input from many colleagues of East Asian cataloging community, the CJK NACO Project is now an official PCC NACO group approved by the PCC Steering Committee. An introductory session of CJK NACO Project will be offered during the meeting of Committee on Technical Processing at Council on East Asian Libraries (CEAL) in Boston on March 21, 2007.

The CJK NACO Project will serve as a platform for CJK cataloging community to participate and interact with other members of PCC groups and bring the voices on cataloging policy and standards issues into the PCC environment. It will also serve as a means to share experience and expertise among the participants, and thus increase the quantity and quality of CJK name authority and bibliographical records.

Current membership includes the East Asian Library at University of California at Berkeley and the Asian Library of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Institutions are invited to joining the Project on a voluntary basis. Lone librarians working with relatively small CJK collections are especially encouraged to participate. The Project will provide CJK NACO training and reviewing. Experienced NACO catalogers may join the Project as reviewers or mentors.

Ms. Shuyong Jiang ([log in to unmask]) of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will serve as the Project Coordinator. Ms. Jiang is a trained PCC NACO Regional Trainer with many years of NACO experience. Please contact Ms. Jiang if you are interested in the Project.

For more information, please visit PCC NACO homepage at: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/naco/naco.html and the newly created CJK NACO homepage at: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/naco/CJK.html. Should you have any further questions, please contact the Cooperative Cataloging Team Leader, Anthony Franks ([log in to unmask]), or Jiping Wu ([log in to unmask]).

We look forward to your participation and efforts in making the CJK NACO Project a successful and valuable venue.

Sincerely,
