Tateuchi Cataloger for Japanese Retrospective Conversion
(Two year temporary position)
LOCATION: East Asia Library, University of Washington Libraries

THE LIBRARIES:
Among the largest academic research libraries in North America, the

EAST ASIA LIBRARY:
The East Asia Library at the University of Washington is among the ten 
major such collections in North America. Services and collections are 
housed in the main branch located in Gowen Hall, and a large auxiliary 
stacks space nearby ensures growth space for the collections. The library 
enjoys strong support within the University of Washington Libraries, with 
its Director reporting directly to the Dean of University Libraries. The 
East Asia Library supports the research and educational programs of the 
China, Japan and Korea Studies Programs.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION:
The University of Washington Libraries seeks an energetic cataloging 
librarian committed to providing high quality access to library materials 
to fill the two-year temporary position of Tateuchi Cataloger for Japanese 
Retrospective Conversion. Reporting to the Japanese Studies Librarian, the 
Tateuchi Cataloger performs original cataloging and enhances available 
cataloging copy for Japanese materials in all formats from the Japanese 
cataloging backlog of the East Asia Library. The cataloger is responsible 
for managing the backlog cataloging project for Japanese materials, 
training and supervising student employees for copy cataloging, and for 
reporting the progress of the project to the Japanese Studies Librarian. 
The position demonstrates the ability to communicate appropriately, 
effectively, and positively.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
     * Performs original cataloging in OCLC using MARC21 formats, LC 
subject headings, LC classification schedules, AACR2 - 2002 revision, and 
LC Rule Interpretations.
     * Enhances existing cataloging records in OCLC as appropriate, in 
accordance with OCLC policies and guidelines.
     * Works with the Japanese Studies Librarian and Japanese Cataloger to 
carry out the workflow and procedures for processing and cataloging the 
Japanese backlog materials and for meeting productivity goals.
     * Maintains detailed statistics for the backlog project for Japanese 
materials.
     * Trains and supervises student assistants in cataloging-related 
duties.
     * Participates in East Asia Library staff and librarian meetings to 
contribute toward library goals by accomplishing duties related to the 
project.
     * Maintains daily and monthly reports of work completed.
     * Performs other duties related to the project as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    1. Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library 
Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies 
degree.
    2. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the 
contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.
    3. Demonstrated reading proficiency in the Japanese language.
    4. Demonstrated strong communication skills in the English language.
    5. Demonstrated knowledge and professional skills of original 
cataloging in OCLC using MARC21 formats, LC subject headings, LC 
classification schedules, AACR2 - 20002 revision, and LC Rule 
Interpretations.
    6. Strong commitment to excellence in service and demonstrated ability 
to work independently and collaboratively in a complex and changing 
environment.
    7. Excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills, 
initiative, and flexibility.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    1. Previous professional working experience with Japanese cataloging 
and familiarity with OCLC CJK cataloging conventions.
    2. Working experience with Innovative Interfaces integrated library 
system or other similar integrated library systems.

SALARY: $42,600 minimum. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications 
and background.

BENEFITS:
Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of 
Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF, The Vanguard Group, and/or Fidelity 
Investments) on a matching basis. Vacation is accrued at the rate of 24 
working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year. 
No state or local income tax.
