2.5C5 only applies if the illustrations are all of one type: "If the publication consists wholly or predominantly of illustrations, give all ill. or chiefly ill., as appropriate. Optionally, if those illustrations are all of one type, give all [name of type] or chiefly [name of type]." Since "ill. (some col.)" isn't preceded by "all" or "chiefly" it's possible the LCRI practice does not apply in this example, though I suspect that there may be a number of situations where the cataloger has a 2.5C5 situation but isn't following the option instructions and preceding ["ill." or name of type] with "all" or "chiefly." But my question is why catalogers [not just LC but PCC or otherwise], in those situations where 2.5C5 does apply, never seem to use the Option, especially since it is LC "practice" to "Apply the provisional option of the rule." What's inhibiting the application of the option, even in situations that seem to me to be relatively straightforward, such as an all-cartoon collection? AACR2 2.5C2 gives the cataloger the option to use an appropriate illustration term if none of the terms in the 2.5C2 option apply. The LCRI says it's LC practice to only use "ill." and/or "maps" unless the book consists only or chiefly of all illustrations of one type (2.5C5 option). So, why can't I find any records that use "all cartoons" or "chiefly cartoons?" There must be hundreds of books that fall into this category. That I can't seem to find the term in LC's or anyone else's cataloging makes me suspect that I'm overlooking something. (For a training session, I thought it would be neat to use "cartoons" as an example to demonstrate the part of the rule that says appropriate terms other than the ones given in the 2.5C2 list can be used.)
