Network Bulletin no. 09-05 Subject: NLS Program Data Index term: Plans for production of audiobooks A number of libraries have asked for a snapshot of current NLS plans for production of audiobooks as we transition from recorded cassette to cartridge format. The attached table, covering years 2007 through 2013, summarizes present plans and shows the anticipated release of audiobooks. The first two "grayed out" years on the table, 2007 and 2008, are included only to show the beginning of the transition as it occurred. In 2009 and 2010, all new titles will be produced on both cassettes and cartridges, with a decreasing number of cassette copies and an increasing number of cartridge copies. Cassette production will cease in 2011. The table also shows that a limited number of retrospective (retro) titles were offered in 2008, and will be offered likewise in 2009 and 2010 (through special copy allotment cycles). Please note that retrospective titles are older titles, primarily analog-to-digital conversions, that were not originally produced on cartridges and have so far been offered only on the NLS Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD). From 2011 forward, retro titles will consist only of those selected for reissue by NLS. Therefore few copies will be produced. This table represents current plans only. The actual number of copies on cartridges may vary over time since the number of cartridges available is tied to the cost of flash memory in the world market.
