For those interested, the PDF brochure insert I mentioned below
that gives an overview of how Aeon enables direct, automated requesting from
EAD/XML files has now been posted to our website:

Hi Ethan,
The short answer to your question is yes.
Aeon is designed to work in conjunction with your existing EAD
search and display platform. Basically, your platform serves as a search and discovery
tool that enables the user to identify relevant finding aids based on a set of
search criteria. To implement Aeon, all you need to do is to add a link from
your interface that points to your Aeon server and tells it where to retrieve
the native EAD/XML file so that it can redisplay the selected finding aid in
the context of the user’s personalized Aeon web account (created at that time,
or beforehand). In redisplaying the finding aid, Aeon applies a customizable
XSLT stylesheet that creates the collapsible headings used to navigate the
guide and the HTML checkboxes next to each container to facilitate automated
requesting.
In preparation for the upcoming SAA annual meeting, I’m
finalizing a new brochure insert that will illustrate how it all works using an
example finding aid from the University of Chicago, which took its Aeon
implementation live last month. I’ll follow up with a posting when that
brochure has been added in PDF format to our website. (The Ransom Center, by
the way, chose to implement our EAD requesting a bit differently, parsing their
guides with a script based on our stylesheet beforehand so that users can skip
the initial browse and view the finding aid with checkboxes even before logging
into their account – Aeon is quite flexible and customizable in that way).
To see this live, feel free to sign up for one of my regularly
scheduled online demos; see http://www.atlas-sys.com/products/aeon/resources.html
for details.
Thanks for your interest!

Christian,
If someone is already using an EAD displaying framework (for example, XTF), can
the Aeon checkbox functionality integrate into the current framework?
Thanks,
Ethan

I have posted the following invitation to the Archivists & Archives
list, but since I know that many here don’t subscribe to it, I thought I would
repost here (with apologies to those who do subscribe to both). Aeon applies a
customizable XSLT stylesheet to your existing EAD/XML finding aids so your
patrons can easily browse them and use them to place requests directly, quickly
and accurately.
Attending SAA? See Aeon in action at the Harry Ransom Center!
Aeon is a new online circulation and request management system specifically
designed for special collections libraries and archives by Atlas Systems,
creators of the ILLiad interlibrary system used by more than 1,100 libraries
across North America. In April, the Harry Ransom Center (HRC) at the University
of Texas at Austin became the first site to start using Aeon; see: http://www.hrc.http://www2.lib.virginia.edu/ccdbutexas.edu/research/aeon/.
If you would like to tour the HRC reading room and see Aeon in action, you
are cordially invited to attend a special event on Thursday evening, August 13
from 5:00pm–7:00pm. Atlas will provide free transportation between the Hilton
Austin conference hotel (leaving at 4:30pm) and the HRC, as well as a
complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres reception at the conclusion of the
presentation. Please RSVP to me (not to the list!) at [log in to unmask]
for details on where to meet transportation and any questions.
Atlas Systems is proud to be a Silver Sponsor of this joint meeting of the
Society of American Archivists and the Council of State Archivists. We invite you
to stop by our booth (#31) in the exhibition hall to learn more about Aeon,
other Atlas products and the consulting services we offer.
See you in Austin!
Christian
PS: I will also be attending the EAD Roundtable on Wednesday afternoon, and
so will be happy to talk with you there as well (some may remember that I did a
preliminary presentation about Aeon at last year’s roundtable).
