There would have been no logic in making choices about horn designs, the placement of performers or about the takes chosen for release based on anything other than simply comparing the sound of the performers to the sound of playback. Reproducing them in any "more accurate" manner is just as stupid and self indulgent as "colorizing" a classic black and white motion picture. Yes, that's empirical and subjective.
