in general,  length affects the noise behaviour (picking up RF noise) 
more than anything else insofar as quality is concerned.  (noise 
reduces quality so, they are certainly related!).

unbalanced is good for 15 feet, 5m, or less.

balanced can run for ridiculous lengths without picking up RF noise.

hutch of Neve (nee Manley) prefers unbalanced in many areas such as 
feeds to amps (ground not connected at the receiving end, i.e., input 
to the amp) to avoid loops.
