Since 1894, the National Geographic Society’s Libraries and Information Services (LIS) has been located at the society’s headquarters iin Washington, D.C. Their staff is dedicated to providing the society’s staff and partners with the best information sources to enable them to
work anytime and anywhere in an increasingly dynamic global environment. They also help members and the public with questions about
National Geographic’s products and geographic topics. LIS is intent on encouraging knowledge sharing through learning opportunities, improving indexing, providing staff competitive editorial and business information, managing essential business documents and records to meet the legal requirements and to preserve and leverage the society’s heritage.

The Great Escapes tour of the National Geographic Society Library will include a tour of the collections of the Library, including its map collection and rare book collection, as well as a description of the services offered by the library to the National Geographic Society and the public.

The closest Metro stations are Farragut North (Red) & Farragut West (Orange/Blue). The National Geographic Society has three main buildings spanning 16th & 17th Sts. between L & M with three entrances. The closest entrance to the Library is the 1146 16th St. entrance between L & M streets. All visitors must sign in at the guard’s desk at that entrance.
