Dear Nick,

You are correct that a revision of Encoded Archival Description is in the works. SAA Council created the Technical Subcommittee for Encoded Archival Description (the successor to the EAD Working Group) early this year and charged it with completing a revision of EAD within five years. For more information on TS-EAD, including a committee roster, seehttp://www2.archivists.org/groups/technical-subcommittee-on-ead.

TS-EAD held its first meeting at the SAA annual meeting in August, where we discussed the timeline for the revision and some preliminary thoughts about what changes to EAD we might make. The first stage of the revision process is the comment period, which is currently under way. The call for comments and the comment form are available athttp://www.archivists.org/standards/ead/eadRevisions.asp. Comments are due by February 28, 2011.

As you will see in the call for comments, we hope tocompletethe revision in time for the 2013 SAA annual meeting. It is too early to commit to specific changes to the standard, but among the principles guiding our discussion so far are respect for existing practice, improvedinteroperabilitywith relational databases, greater ease of implementation, and clarification of EAD's relationship with Encoded Archival Context - Corporate bodies, Persons, and Families (EAC-CPF).

I hope this answers your questions. I'd be happy to answer further questions off list.

Sincerely,

Mike Rush, Co-chair, TS-EAD

Dear List,

I am a final year MLIS student writing a paper on the evolution of EAD. I have been informed that a new version or update of EAD is in the works, yet I am having difficulty finding information that pertains to this. I have checked through the listserv archive and the LC website.

If someone could kindly point me in the right direction, that would be greatly appreciated!

Best,

Nick
