The Indiana University Libraries-Bloomington seek an innovative,
experienced, and user-oriented professional to fill the position of
Head, Cataloging Division in the Technical Services Department of the
Herman B Wells Library.  This redefined senior management position has
an opportunity to play a strategic role in transforming the work of
the Cataloging Division to include the development and management of
non-MARC metadata creation.  The successful candidate needs to be able
to think broadly about how the work of technical services can aid
learners and assist in the research endeavors of the university in
today’s rapidly changing information environment.

Founded in 1820, Indiana University-Bloomington has grown from a small
state seminary into the flagship campus of a great public university
with over 42,000 students and almost 3,000 faculty. With a
world-renowned research reputation, IUB is also known for its
innovative academic programs and attentiveness to undergraduates. The
campus covers over 1,800 wooded acres and is distinctive for both its
park-like beauty and an architectural heritage inspired by local
craftsmanship in limestone.

The IUB Libraries (http://www.libraries.iub.edu/) are one of the
leading academic research library systems in North America, having
recently been named the top university library by the Association of
College and Research Libraries.  The Libraries provide strong
collections, quality service and instructional programs, and
leadership in the application of information technologies.  The IU
Libraries system consists of eighteen libraries or units on the
Bloomington campus, five libraries in Indianapolis, and a library at
each of the six campuses across the state. The IUB collections include
more than 6.6 million books, journals, maps, films, and sound
recordings in over 900 languages. The materials support every academic
discipline on campus, with an emphasis in the humanities and social
sciences. Users can access more than 400 databases, 43,000 electronic
journals, and 224,000 electronic books, as well as locally developed
digital content. The IUB Libraries are active members of regional and
national associations and consortia including the Committee on
Institutional Cooperation (CIC), the Association of Research Libraries
(ARL), the Center for Research Libraries (CRL), and the Digital
Library Federation (DLF).  In addition, IUB is a founding member of
the LOCKSS and CLOCKSS initiative and plays a leadership role in the
Kuali OLE (Open Library Environment) Project.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Technical Services, the Head,
Cataloging Division serves as a member of the department’s senior
management team and provides leadership in strategic planning,
administration, and resource allocation for technical services
activities.  The Technical Services Department consists of two
divisions:  Acquisitions and Cataloging.  The Cataloging Division
operations pertain to original and complex copy cataloging of
monographs, continuing resources, audio-visual materials, maps,
electronic resources, and other bibliographic formats in Western
European, Slavic/East European, Middle Eastern, and
Chinese/Japanese/Korean languages.  Division staff actively
participate in national programs including BIBCO, CONSER, NACO, SACO,
OCLC Enhance, and National Enhance.  In addition, the division is
responsible for database maintenance, the coordination of record
loads, authority control, and physical processing.  The Libraries’
integrated library system is SirsiDynix Symphony.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Head, Cataloging Division provides strategic
and effective management of the overall Cataloging Division’s
activities, including non-MARC metadata creation, provision of access
to significant electronic collections, and traditional cataloging of
information resources in all formats and languages. The incumbent
manages and develops staff (7 librarians, 3 professional staff, and 32
support staff) during a critical period for technical services brought
about by the changing composition of research library collections.
This position will play an important role in positioning the Libraries
to support evolving metadata infrastructures.  S/he will cultivate
proactive solutions for issues of bibliographic description/management
and develop short and long-range plans based on an awareness of
current developments and future trends in academic libraries as well
as an ability to think broadly about technical services operations.
S/he will collaborate with the Digital Library Program and colleagues
across the Libraries to support growing metadata and digital
collections initiatives.

The Head, Cataloging Division ensures that library information
resources in all formats are rapidly and accurately described in the
online catalog and other finding tools so these are available to the
Libraries’ user community.  He or she:

▪       Plans, organizes, and evaluates effectiveness and efficiency of
procedures and workflows for creation of library cataloging
▪       Provides leadership and management for initiatives and projects in
the application of metadata
▪       Stays abreast of new technology, national developments, and best
practices in order to integrate these into the Libraries as
appropriate
▪       Provides leadership in the development and implementation of Kuali
OLE (Open Library Environment)
▪       Manages divisional operations and budgets including the direct
supervision of two librarians and one professional/administrative
appointee responsible for overseeing a staff of 42 performing non-MARC
metadata creation, cataloging, authority control, database
maintenance, and physical materials processing
▪       Assists the Associate Dean for Technical Services and the Head,
Acquisitions Division with the planning, coordination, and
establishment of procedural and policy changes as well as the
implementation of administrative directives
▪       Develops and implements cataloging policy within a
multi-campus environment
▪       Provides leadership in operational aspects of the Program for
Cooperative Cataloging on all levels, including BIBCO, CONSER, SACO,
and NACO
▪       Studies and implements initiatives in consultation with the
Associate Dean for Technical Services and the Head, Acquisitions
Division to deal with new/evolving technologies with the goal of using
improvements in automation to expedite the operations performed within
the department

QUALIFICATIONS: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or
equivalent combination of education and experience; minimum of 4 years
of increasingly responsible relevant  supervisory experience in an
academic or research library system; minimum of 5 years professional
cataloging and/or metadata experience; demonstrated ability to provide
strong leadership and management and to work collaboratively in an
environment of continuous change; evidence of strong planning,
organizational, budgetary, analytical and project management skills;
demonstrated working knowledge of cataloging rules, standards, and
tools such as LCRI, AACR2rev, LCSH (and other controlled
vocabularies), RDA, FRBR, and FRAD and of developments and trends in
the field; knowledge of evolving metadata standards and schema (i.e.,
Dublin Core, MARC, EAD, TEI, etc.); knowledge of one or more foreign
languages highly desirable; record of innovation and creative
problem-solving, with an interest and involvement in emerging digital
information environments; experience with OCLC and a substantial level
of experience with integrated library systems; excellent oral and
written communication skills; evidence of an ongoing record of
professional development and contribution; ability to meet the
requirements of a tenure-track position.
